Helical instability of a linear discharge plasma produced by an electrolytic condenser bank is investigated with a streak camera. The capacity and the working voltage of the bank are 1.1×10^4μF and 500 volts respectively. The process of formation of the helical plasma is observed. The formation of the helix started about 20 μsec after the initiation of discharge, and the helix rotates with an angular velocity of several degrees per microsecond. The validity of Shafranov's condition for a stable plasma is experiment ally verified. Regular ripples superimposed on the wave forms of the voltage and current pulses corresponded to the rotation of plasma stripes.
