The weed flora in the Hidaka district, Hokkaido, was surveyed from 1981 to 1985. It consisted of 452 species in 61 families, including poisonous weeds to domestic animals and naturalized weeds grown in non-arable lands. These species were classified in the following three groups by the habitats : the upland weeds in and around upland fields (92 annuals and 177 perennials-a total of 269 species in 44 families), the lowland weeds in and around lowland fields (20 annuals and 30 perennials-a total of 50 species in 17 families) and the common weeds both in upland and lowland fields (12 annuals and 29 perennials-a total of 41 species in 17 families). Sixty six species of weeds in 28 families were identified as poisonous. These weeds included 15 annuals and 51 perennials, and ammong them 25 species were found only in non-arable lands. One hundred and fifty five species of naturalized weeds were found in arable or non-arable lands. They consisted of 84 annuals and 71 perennials, in 27 families, with 84 species growing in upland fields. Ammong the 61 families studied the 8 major families included, compositae (71 species), Gramineae (67 species), Cruciferae (28 species), Polygonaceae (23 species), Caryophyllaceae (22 species), Cyperaceae (22 species), Leguminosae (19 species) and Labiatae (19 species).
