Caryopsis vanations of fourteen populations of weed oats m Japan were examined. A11 of the weed oats studied were hexaploid species, Avena fatua, A. sativa and A. sterilis subsp. trichophylla. A. fatua could be divided into eight caryopsis morphs by means of their color and hairiness. Two populations were monomorphic, 5 were bimorphic and the others were highly polymorphic. Two morphs (the brown caryopsis with short callus hairs and dense hairs on its back, and the yellow and glabrous caryopsis with short callus hairs) showed a smaller caryopsis, and a morph (the grey to black caryopsis with long callus hairs and a few to many hairs on its back) showed a larger caryopsis. A weak correlation was observed between morph polymorphism(SHANNON-WEAVER's measure) and log generalized variance (within population variability of caryopsis size). Populations from cereal fields were polymorphic and showed a larger generalized variance. Monomorphic populations showed a lower generalized variance. It was assumed that the caryopsis polymorphism in weed oat populations in Japan is due to frequent migrations by human disturbance and immigrations from seed pool in the soil.
