Development of High Resolution ESR Imaging to Investigate on Paramagnetic Species in Thin Film Samples

A high resolution ESR imaging was constructed to measure microscopic spatial distribution of paramagnetic species. The spatial resolution of about 20 μm was attained for a stable radical diphenylpicorylhydrazyl (DPPH). The maximum magnetic field gradient of about 1200 gauss/cm was obtained by feeding pulsed DC current (maximum peak current is 30 Å) into a Helmholtz coils pair equipped with a rectangular mode microwave X-band cavity. The orientation distribution of directors was measured in a thin flat cell (thickness 500 μm) of a nematic liquid crystal MBBA.
