Eu^<2+> as an Optical Probe to Analyse the Influence of Sr-Second Phase Precipitates on the Hardening Behavior of NaCl

The effect of the state of precipitation of strontium ions on the hardneing behavior of NaCl has been investigated. The data reported in this paper demostrate that, depending on temperature, the Sr-precipitation processes affect in different ways the yield stress of supersaturated solid solution crystals. In order to get a better insight into the obstacles responsible for the changes in the value of the yield stress, the europium ion was emplyed as an optical probe taking advantage of the fact that this ion can be incorporated into the different Sr-second phase precipitates modyfing its optical spectra due to changes in the local crystalline environment.
