Ordered Structures of Au-Mn Alloys Containing 25-28 at.%Mn Studied by High Voltage, High Resolution Electron Microseopy

Changes in the ordered structures of the Au-Mn system with composition have been studied in the range of 25-28 at.%Mn with the aid of high resolution images taken with a 1 MV electron microscope. The orthorhombic structure (2d-Au_3Mn) existing at 24 at.%Mn is not stable when Mn content increases: symmetry of the structure changes gradually to monoclinic, and the excess Mn atoms are accemmodated by forming the Mn-Mn nearest-neighbour pairs aligned in the <120> directions. The number of Mn-Mn pairs along the <120> increases with increase in Mn content, and the structure transforms continuously to the Au_5Mn_2.
