Crystal Growth Faults in Superconductor Tl-Ba-Ca-Cu-O Oxide Crystals : Condensed Matter

Superconductor oxides, Tl_2Ba_2CaCu_2O_<8+x>(2212) and Tl_2Ba_2Ca_2Cu_3O_<10+x>(2223), in the Tl-Ba-Ca-Cu-O system are intimately intergrown in various types of fine scale tacking faults. Removal of these planar faults is a key point in growing large single crystals of the 2223 phase. Among various planar faults, planar boundary structures between the 2212 and 2223 phases were studied by an electron microscope. Slab widths of the 2212 phase terminated on a (110) plane in the 2223 phase tend to have the width of a 5:4 lattice fringe line ratio. A structure for thee boundary and its stability is discussed in terms of the solid state reaction.
