Oxygen contamination in SrS:Ce thin-film electroluminescent devices was studied. We found that the luminance is reduced by the oxygen contamination in the SrS:Ce thin films and that oxygen concentration is strongly influenced by the evaporation rate. The source of the oxygen contamination is SrCO_3 in the SrS: Ce pellet due to incomplete refining and/or reactions with atmospheric H_2O and CO_2. Significantly higher luminance has been obtained by reducing the SrCO_3 concentration in SrS:Ce pellets.
