The photoacoustic spectrum P(λ) of the superionic conductors β-Ag_3SI and αAg_3SI has been measured in the range 270≦λ≦1800 nm at room temperature, A difference in the band gap is observed in each specimen; in the annealed β-phase and in the quenched α-phase. These data can be interpreted on the basis of a simple band model in which Pantelides has shown that the band gap varies approximately with an equilibrium nearest-neighbor distance, d, as d^<-2>. As a result, Ag_3SI (E_g(β)=1.11 eV and E_g(α)=1.47 eV) is found to have a small band gap in comparison with γ-AgI (E_g=2.85 eV). Therefore, Ag_3SI resembles a semiconductor and the electrons make a large contribution to the conductivity in comparison with AgI.
