A small amount of powder was sintered by the ablation pressure of 20 〜 30 kilobars generated by the irradiation of a focused ion beam with a high power density of 1.1 × 10^<10> W/cm^2. By the observation of a sintered mixture of two metals (aluminium and tin), it was known that powder grains did not melt but that the two metals merge in a thin layer of 〜 0.8 μm in thickness on the surface of the grains and that metal in a flowing or melted diffusible state under high pressure infiltrated the gaps between the powder grain boundaries.
