We demonstrate the effect of cation vacancy on flux pinning, or the critical current density in an applied field, by the transport method. The critical current density for a Bi-deficient composition is found to be 2-6 times greater than that for a stoichiometric one at 20 K in 5 T, while both samples have the same J_c values without a magnetic field and approximately the same H_<c2> values. The data provide convincing evidence that the cation vacancies and/or their clusters function as effective pinning centers in the Bi_2(Sr, Ca)_3Cu_2O_<8+δ> system.
