The calculation of the phase noise and the power spectrum carried out for wavelength tunable laser diodes proves that its line shape cannot be approximated by the Lorentzian shape to determine the spectral linewidth. Since the shot noise in the tuning region, which contributes significantly to the laser phase noise, exhibits a bandwidth of about 100 MHz the line shape decreases stronger than expected from the corresponding linewidth. Therefore the noise power is smaller than calculated from a Lorentzian approximation.
