Absorption Lines in the KrCl Laser Spectrum and the Spontaneous Emission of the Medium Related to KrCl

A discharge-pumped KrCl laser and spontaneous emission spectra were investigated using a high-resolution grating spectrograph and two different type quartz-prism spectrographs. The high-resolution spectrum revealed strong absorption lines in the laser continuum, most of which could be assigned to the rotational lines of H^<35>Cl bands of the B^1Σ-X^1Σ system. In the spontaneous-emission spectrum of the KrCl laser medium twelve peaks of the B-X system were observed; also the C-X and C-A systems of KrCl were identified through an analogy with other rare gas halides. To suppress HCl absorption lines the halogen donor, HCl, in the KrCl Baser medium was replaced by Cl_2. This replacement made the KrCl excimer unable to lase, while the HCl absorption was not weakened at all. The discharge became very bright around the cathode due to a strong continuum from UV to visible.
