The effect of energy, focus and material variation on flare frequency was examined in this work. A series of streak photographs were taken and analysed. Flare behaviour was shown to be widely different between different materials. Flare frequency was also shown to be independent of energy and focus with exceptions occuring at low power 10.1 J, and long focus F.100". An unusual phenomenon was observed when copper was drilled at high energy and F.030." Liquid globes ejected from the surface continued to flare. The effect of high energies on maximum particle velocity and drilling speed was also investigated.
