A method of measuring the water content distribution in a soil layer packed in a column, using fast neutron transmission, has been developed. The calibration curve of the water content was obtained from the rate of decrease of fast neutrons per unit of water content. An NE-213 organic scintillator (2" in diameter×2" in length) and Cf-252 (273 μCi) were used as the fast neutron detector and neutron source respectively. The distribution curve of soil water content obtained by the present method was consistent with that obtained by the destructive drying method. The NE-213 scintillator was superior to other conventional detectors (^3He, BF_3 counter) in measurement accuracy, spatial resolution and measurement sensitivity. The relative error and sensitivity of the present method are discussed in detail in this report.
