The role of the magnetic field in the behavior of magnetic multipole discharge is investigated experimentally by using a bucket type ion source with electromagnets. There exist two modes of discharge which transit each other in the critical current. The relation between the plasma density profile and the magnetic field is experimentally clarified by taking into account the filament position, that is, (I) the magnetic field strength near the filament must be below 80±20 G to get no peaked density profile, and (2) a region of a density uniformity better than 10% is obtained within 20±10 G contour. The dependence of the arc efficiency and the ion species composition on the magnetic field strength are studied and discussed.
