Up to now there has been considerable variation in the starting voltage, V_s, of high-pressure sodium lamps, and some lamps do not light when the regular voltage is applied. In this paper, a method by which the value of V_s can be uniformly lowered is presented, together with an examination of the factors which influence V_s. By connecting a choke stability apparatus to the short support line, and by shortening the distrance between the ceramic arc tube and the long support line, it is possible to light a high-pressure sodium lamp with a high V_s value at a low voltage. Measurements of the electric potential distribution using the static electricity probe method indicated that the electric field intensity has a subtle effect on the starting voltage.
