The existence of microwave effects was reexamined for a temperature-sensitive inorganic reaction, the disintegration of sodium hydrogen carbonate in water, for which the microwave nonthermal effects have been previously reported. Comparative experimental tests were executed for microwave- and conventional infrared-heated reactions, with their thermal conditions and apparatus being carefully made similar. Their standard deviations in conversion were observed to range between 2 and 6%, showing that there are no appreciable microwave effects on the tested reaction.
