Piezooptic Behaviour of Li_2Ge_7O_<15> Crystals

The piezooptic constants of Li_2Ge_7O_<15> are measured for differetat orientations and at various temperatures between 298 K and 283 K. The results show an anomalous behaviour of these constants in the temperature range investigated for certain orientations. A minimum value of the relative stress optical constants is observed for stress along the ferroelectric axis and observation along the other two natural axes. The temperature at which the minimum occurs is found to be slightly different for the two orientations. A strong photoelastic thermal hysteresis is observed when the crystal is stressed a1ong the ferroelectric axis.
