The parallel fringe field method with a simple pixel structure is proposed to fabricate. the two-domain twist nematic (TDTN) liquid crystal display (LCD) to improve the viewing angle behavior of conventional LCDs. The three-dimensional simulation results showed that two pairs of parallel fringe fields drive liquid crystal molecules in two areas of the pixel to tilt in two opposite directions and thus two domains are formed. The experimental results on the test panels confirmed the simulation results. Furthermore, a thin film transistor (TFT) addressed TDTN panel fabricated using this method demonstrated a factor of two improvement in the vertical viewing angle over the conventional single-domain TFT/TN panel.
