A discontinuous change in the anchoring condition on a substrate of a nematic liquid crystal cell gives rise to adisclination line attached to the substrate surface. We have analysed the distortion of the director field in the presence of such surface disclinations by using the technique of conformal mapping. For a given (strong) anchoring condition there exist several different director configurations. However, an analysis of the associated elastic free energy revealed that among these configurations the director patterns in which neighboring disclination lines have opposite sign have lowest free energy and only such configurations are stable. In these stable configurations the distortion of the director extends along the direction of the substrate plane over a distance of the order of the cell thickness from the position of the disclination line.
