Patterned Bi-Sr-Ca-Co-O Films on Sr_2Ca_2Cu_4O_y Substrates by Surface Diffusion of Metallic Bismuth

A technique which combines the fabrication and patterning of films 1 μm in thickness of the high T_c superconducting Bi_2Sr_2Ca_1Cu_2O_y has been developed. Patterns are generated directly on the Sr-Ca-Cu-O (Sr:Ca:Cu=2:2:4) ceramic substrate using thermal evaporation of metallic bismuth through a mask followed by heat treatment at 830℃ for 1 minute in air. Resistivity measurements for a patterned film show an onset to the superconducting state occurring at 85 K with zero resistivity at 79 K.
