Phase Retrieval Using a Lorentzian Filter

Previously we presented a method for retrieving the phase of the Fourier transform of an object from Fourier intensity data obtained with and without an exponential filter in the object plane. In the case of phase retrieval in remote sensing, however, it is difficult to carry out the direct operation of filtering at the object plane. An alternative phase retrieval method using a Lorentzian filter is proposed, by which the Fourier phase can be retrieved from intensity data obtained with and without the Lorentzian filter in the Fourier-transform plane of the object. Optical systems for applying the method to one- and two-dimensional cases are also described. The performance of the phase retrieval method is shown in computer simulation studies of the reconstructions of a one-dimensional real object and a two-dimensional phase object.
