A simplified expression for the heats of formation of binary semiconductor compounds from the solid elements is presented on the basis of a thermodynamic cycle of the phase equilibrium. Three major contributions are revealed:the free energies of fusion of the constituent elements, the configurational entropy of the liquid soluton, and the excess enthalpy of mixing. A numerical estimation of the heats of formation at 298 K of the III-V and II-VI compounds is carried out from the melting temperature data as the minimum information about the compound, in addition to the thermodynamic data of the elements. The regular solution model and quasi-chemical solution model are assumed for the liquid phases, where the interaction parameters are evaluated through modified calculation of the bond energies. A consistent agreement with the experimental values is obtained.
