The uniaxial magnetic anisotropy constant, K_u of nickel-iron thin films electrode-posited on surfaces scratched in one direction was measured to clarify the origin of this anisotropy. The easy axis of the uniaxial magnetic anisotropy in nickel-iron thin films was observed to lie parallel to the scratches and the easy axis of the uniaxial magnetic anisotropy in nickel thin film was observed to lie perpendicular to the scratches. A simple model is proposed to explain the observed anisotropy. And it is found in this work that K_u is comrosed of the share anisotropy and the magnetostrictive anisotropy and is well expressed as 1/2 (N_t-N_p) I_s^2+3/2λσsin^2θ. It is also found that in nickel-iron thin filrns the shape anisotropy plays a significant role, on the other hand, in nickel thin film the magnetostrictive anisotropy plays a significant role.
