In an attempt to measure the critical resolved shear stress for <100> slip of bcc metals, Fe-2%V single crystals were compressed along [110] direction, constraining the sidefaces, (001) and (001), with a pair of fixed walls. Under these conditions, all <111> slips are geometrically expected to be suppressed, and consequently [100] or [010] slip will be activated. Electron microscope study on specimens compressed in the above mentioned manner, however, showed no sign of <100> slip being activated and it was concluded that at room temperature the critical resolved shear stress for <100> slip was over an order of magnitude higher than that for <111> slip.
