Scattering and charge exchange at the metal surface of H_<1^+>, H_<2^+>, H_<3^+> and H_<1^0> with energies between 6 and 40 KeV were measured. It was found that the energy spectra and intensities of scattered protons are the same for four kinds of the projectiles (H_<1^+>, H_<2^+>, H_<3^+> and H_<1^0>) when the velocities of the incident projectiles were the same. The peak energy and the FWHM of the energy distribution curve of emergent protons increase with increasing incident energy. The integrated intensity of emergent protons increases linearly with increasing energy at the low energy region and tends to saturate gradually at the high energy. The experimental results obtained, including the result on the angular distribution, are discussed by using the "one deflection model" by considering the charge-exchange collisions and the electronic energy loss of proton.
