Etch Pits in Manganese Ferrite Single Crystals

An etching procedure for revealing dislocations intersecting the three crystallographic surface in manganese ferrites is developed. Different etchants were used for different crystallographic surface. Etch-patterns are observed on {100} and {110} surfaces etched in 10% H_2SO_4 with zinc powder and on {111} surfaces etched in hydrochloric acid. Etch-patterns of manganese ferrites best plastically at 1350℃ are investigated by this etching technique. It is concluded that the slip lanes of manganese ferrites are {110} with <110> Burgers vectors.
