Elimination of Phosphor Backscattering Effect in Electron Scintillation Spectrometry

Distortions of continuous electron spectra due to the effect of backscattering from phosphors in the scintillation spectrometer have been studied experimentally for different shapes of plastic phosphors and different geometrical source-detector arrangements. Beta ray sources ^<32>P, ^<204>Tl and ^<45>Ca have been used for the test. Spectra obtained with sandwich- and well-type scintillators show the satisfactory apectral shape down to about two-tenth of the maximum energy due to the effective self-elimination of the backscattering effect. In particular the well type is applicable to every sourcedetector geometries. After making corrections for the effect of instrumental resolution, the values of the maximum energy were obtained with good accuracies. Even with a scintillator of the usual plane shape, the observed spectra show very little distortion, in the case of a well-collimated beam of normal incidence.
