Electrolytically-thinned copper foils containing dislocations, grain boundaries and twin structures are heated at temperatures between 200℃ and 600℃ and in air-pressures between 5×10^<-3> mmHg and 760 mmHg in order to investigate the relation between the crystal lattice imperfections in the copper substrate and the oxide crystals formed on the surface. It is observed in the electron microscopic images that cuprous oxide particles are epitaxially formed at the temperature below 400℃ on the copper surface. The oxide particles with diameters less than 1000 Å have a ball shape and some parts project from the copper substrate. Some strain field between ball-like oxides and copper substrate is observed as a contrast anomaly in the electron micrograph. The nucleations of the cuprous oxide crystals are independent of the imperfections in the copper substrate. Some intermediate states of copper oxides which are probably superstructures of paramelaconite and a superstructure of cupric oxide are observed during the oxidation procedure.
