A negative ion source utilizing mercury vapour as a charge-exchange target has been developed for a tandem electrostatic accelerator. Collision processes for hydrogen ions passing through matter are discussed for negative ion production. It is found that a mercury vapour target gives larger hydrogen negative ion yields than a hydrogen gas target, and a maximum of 3.3% of the incident proton beam is converted to negative ions at an energy of 15 keV.
