ESR technique can be used for rate measurement in an ion exchange process, since the signal responds to the presence of paramagnetic ions in the ion exchanger. Employment of this method, which gives continuously the rate curve in situ, is illustrated by an example of measurements on rates of Cu^<++>-Zn^<++> exchange with polystyrene-sulfonic acid cation exchange resin. The measurements were carried out at different concentration of CuSO_4 and ZnSO_4 solutions with resin beads of several particle diameters. Rate constants obtained show that the rate is controlled by both film diffusion and particle diffusion.
