Backward phonon echoes were observed in single domain lithium niobate. The phonon echo amplitude generated through the parametric interaction was measured as a function or input and pump field powers. The attenuation coefficient of the transverse wave at room temperature was obtained by the phonon-echo method and is compared with the value obtained by the ordinary pulse-echo method. The decay time (T_2) was found to be about 20 μs corresponding to the attenuation coefficient of -0.041 dB/cm.
