A heat flux of a finite pulse width injected at the front surface of a solid sample is expressed by a unit step function to be compared with the heat impulse. The solid sample mentioned above is thermally insulated over a range of finite lengths. The solution to a heat-conduction equation is obtained by applying the Laplace transformation and is discussed as a function of the pulse duration. From the transient behavior of the solution, it can easily be shown that the thermal diffusivities obtained by the pulse responses with the finite pulse width shift somewhat towards larger values than those obtained by the impulsive response.
