Relation between Laser Characteristics and Nd Ion Concentration in Nd: YAG Crystals

Experimental results are reported on the relation between the CW laser characteristics and the Nd ion concentration in Nd doped Y_3Al_5O_<12>(Nd: YAG) single crystals. The lasers studied are pumped by W-I or Kr arc lamps and equipped with single or double elliptical cavities. The equilibrium distribution coefficient of the Nd ion is determined in our pulling grown Nd: YAG crystals to be 0.151 from the Nd ion concentration by X-ray fluorescence analyses. The slope efficiency and the inverse of the effective lamp input power at the threshold of the Nd: YAG laser ate found to be proportional to the Nd ion concentration. Under the high lamp input power, however, the saturation of the laser output is observed for crystals with Nd ions more than 1.0 atomic % because of the large positive lens effect of the pumped rod.
