Processing of hardened dichromated gelatin (HDG) developed by Shankoff, Lin and others are improved by adding a treatment with HCl aqueous solution. The diffraction efficiency of a HCl-processed hologram is as high as that of the previous HDG holograms. The HCl processing yields the light sensitivity ten times greater than that obtained by the previous method, and a wide saturation range of the diffraction efficiency in a HDG hologram. By recording Fourier transform holograms in this saturation region, the nonuniformity of diffraction efficiency can be reduced by one-third when combined with a 2 cell/bit information recording configuration. A mechanism of the saturation characteristics is discussed in detail based on optical visibility.
