Assuming a power potential between ions and atomic electrons the characteristics of the electronic stopping power of solids for charged particles as a function of the incident energy are obtained. They exhibit a Gaussian distribution. A periodic dependence of the electronic stopping cross section is also explained in terms of the reduction of the electronic charges of ions and atoms taking account of the electron shielding effects of the most tightly bound electrons. The results are in good agreement with experiments over the energy range from a few eV to a hundred Mev.
