The temporal coherence of a glass laser operating in normal and Q-switched oscillations and of its second harmonic is measured with a Michelson type two-beam interferometer as a function of the path difference. The experimental results are compared with a theory in which a great number of adjacent axial modes having Gaussian distributions are assumed to oscillate within the Gaussian emission line of the laser. Numerical results show that the temporal coherence is principally determined by the total number of modes, the cavity length and the position of the distribution of oscillating modes relative to the center of the emission line. A fairly good agreement with the experiment is obtained for normal oscillation.
