An investigation of the effect of additional multipole fields in the initial stage of the plasma production with a conical theta-pinch gun is described. A model to explain the effect is proposed and the experimental results which support the model are obtained. A streak camera, a floating double probe and a monochrometer are used for the investigation of the effect of multipole fields. The plasma formation in the initial stage of theta-pinch is affected by the power input distribution which is dominated by the magnetic field. The region where the plasma develops can be detached from the wall of the discharge chamber by changing the power input distribution by applying additional multipole fields.
