Six different chemical precipitates of CdS are made into photoconductors under various firing conditions. Hexagonality, particle diameter, its distribution, spectral sensitivity, and reflectivity are measured. Results show that the difference of firing temperature is more effective than that of flux or activator content for the diameter growth and the doping of Cu ions, especially when the specific volume of the chemical precipitate is large. When the firing temperature is 500℃, particle diameter, the ratio of the peak height of spectral sensitivity and the absorption due to Cu ions of the photoconductors decrease, as the specific volume of the chemical precipitate increases. Correlation among particle diameter, the ratio of the peak height, and the absorption due to Cu ions in CdS bulk is observed. The correlation is complicated, and is dependent on the specific volume of the chemical precipitate used. It is concluded that the properties of photoconductor CdS are largely dependent on the properties of the chemical precipitates used as starting materials, especially when the firing temperature is low.
