The adsorption and desorption of CO for tungsten have been studied by a field-emission microscope with a steady-state or pulsed field to make clear the location dependency of binding states of CO adsorbed on tungsten surface, i.e., one weakly held α state and three more strongly held β states which are distinguished by flash desorption measurements. CO in the a state is found on all the planes of tungsten, whereas the β states depend on the surface structure. From the field-emission microscopic observation of the adsorption of CO in tungsten above 600℃, there seems to be some possibility of dissociation of CO on hot tungsten.
