The excitation problem of a confocal spherical resonator is theoretically analyzed, when the source is distributed on one of mirrors of the resonator. A numerical analysis is made in a particular case where a resonator is excited by a uniformly-distributed source on the surface of the mirror. Numerical results of field patterns are presented for oblique incidence with a parameter c=7 (c=2πN, N=Fresnel number). The Q-factor of the resonance is obtained from an input power curve, and the characteristic diffraction loss δ_d=(1-λ_<m,n>)/√<λ_<m,n>> for each mode (m, n) of the free oscillation is obtained from this Q-factor (λ_<m,n>=cΓ^2_<m,n>, Γ_<m,n> is an eigen-value of an integral equation of the free oscillation).
