Study on Stimulated Brillouin Scattering by Varying Both Phonon Lifetime and Pulse Duration of Laser

The transient effects in the backward stimulated Brillouin scattering have been investigated in solids and liquids through the threshold power measurements. For solids, the dependence of the threshold on the phonon lifetime was measured by varying temperature from 300°K to 20°K. A small dependence was obtained. For liquids, the relative threshold power was measured by varying the time duration of a Q-switched ruby laser pulse from 10 ns to 200 ns. A higher threshold was obtained at 10 ns by a factor of 3 than that of 200 ns for liquid n-hexane, while no appreciable difference was obtained over this range for carbon disulfide. The experimental results indicate that a transient analysis is needed even when the phonon lifetime is one order of magnitude less than the pulse duration of the exciting laser. Self-focusing effects in liquids on stimulated Brillouin scattering have been also studied.
