Experimental Studies on the Properties of the Air Gap Spark Chamber

An investigation on an air gap spark chamber under the atmospheric pressure, especially on its efficiency for detecting multiple tracks, is described in this paper. The particle trajectory in a gap is determined within a probable error of 0.5mm with three spark gaps which are separated from one another by 10cm. The maximum efficiency for detecting a single track obtained in this study is about 95%. The spurious sparks which are induced by the other spark are prevented by means of isolating optically each gap from others.
