(i) A(0,0) mode of the sound wave is excited in a duct with its rear end closed with a thick rockwool blanket. The characteristic impedance and propagation constants of the rockwoll are determined by the standing wave method. (ii) (0,0) and (1,0) mode travelling waves are excited in a duct with its walls lined with rockwool blankets and the propagation constants of the duct are determined from measurements. (iii) The following quantities are calculated employing the above-mentioned data, for (0,0) and (1,0) waves: (1) the variations of both the pressure and particle velocity in a cross section of the duct; (2) energy flow density; (3) stream lines of energy; (4) the surface of an equal phase (i. e. wave front). Some of the calculated values showed fairly good agreement with the observed results.
