A new small diameter cone sampler has been developed and its applicability for Pleistocene Osaka Mal2 clay is examined through unconfmed compression tests (UCT), triaxial compression tests (TCT) under unconsolidated undrained conditions and incremental loading oedometer tests (ILOT) for samples obtained by the cone sampler, the sampler with a two-chambered hydraulic piston (45-mm) and the rotary double-tube (75R) sampler. The quality of samples obtained from the cone sampler is similar to that of the 45-mm sampler and higher than those of the 75R sampler for Osaka Mall clay. The sampling cost is lower and the required time for sampling is shorter, since an undisturbed sample can be taken without using a borehole. The cone sampler contributes to geotechnical investigation accuracy and design reliability.
