This paper describes the introduction to the automatic speech recognition. First, the acoustic characteristics of speech are described and the speech recognition process in man is discussed with the speech production process. Here, the recognition of spoken word by man is explaned as to find a word in his memory which corresponds to the input speech. The recognition of general speech is also explained as to content his logical imagination by input speech. According to those discussions, the generalized algorithm for speech recognition is discussed. And the methods for speech recognition are systematically classified and the outline of every method is described with the representative studies especially in Japan. There are recently remarkable progress in speech recognition technology, but there are also many problems to put the speech recognition into broad practical use.
