Recently the computer industry is changing very rapidly. If we compare the current situation to the time when numerical simulations first became popular in Japanese industry, the performance of computers is vastly improved and how computers are used has also greatly changed. In this essay, I discuss how IBM's systems have been used for simulation applications, starting from IBM's mainframe days to the new e-business era. There have been three conspicuous changes, a recent trend to open architectures led by the UNIX culture, a paradigm shift from bipolar to CMOS in hardware technology, and the Internet revolution in communication technology. The first one affects the characteristics of engineers working in the computer industry, the second one directly extends the possibilities of simulation, but also has affects on the architecture of general purpose computers, and the final one may change the future style of simulations done by special purpose computers.
