An imbalanced initial condition of a dynamic simulation system described by a set of ordinal differential equations was estimated from the measured signals of a plant. The methods developed here include an iterative convergent scheme for a past time-data and an evaluation of the error between the measured and the calculated transient response. By minimizing the error with the aid of function minimization techniques or Lyapunov functional, the imbalanced initial condition was able to be estimated, even for non-linear systems. As an essential assumption, the observability of the system should be guaranteed to deal with an estimation problem of the initial condition of a dynamic system. These methods were applied to the water level estimation of three tanks connected each other, only in one of which a level sensor was installed. And the true initial water levels of other tanks with no level sensor were estimated with 2-4% error. As a special case, an unknown parameter in the system such as the cross area caused by a sudden pipe break was identified simultaneously, as well as the initial condition. An application structure was also considered in the case that a complex plant was being controlled with the state prediction method by human operators.
