This paper provides brief summary and prospect of load flow method, which is one of the most primary analysis tools in the power system engineering field. In the first place, a basic formulation of load flow problem is described, which is followed by a review on several load flow algorithms of current use. In the second part, in order to cope with versatile demand of deciding power system operational strategies, various extensions of basic load flow technique are outlooked : They are load flow algorithm of handling ac-dc composite systems, constrained load flow, optimum load flow, and stochastic load flow. The state of the art of load flow programming technique is explained by numerical examples on model power systems. The results claim that the standard N-R method in polar system is still valid for small systems of up to 100 nodes considering its reliability. Finally, briefing the prospect of load flow method for its future development concludes the paper.
